VOSA issued £1,800 of fixed penalty notices for overloaded light goods vehicles during Operation Utah, a large-scale multi-agency check on M4 traffic in Wales that took place on 11 June.
Police officers and members of seven key enforcement agencies used a variety of enforcement tools, including Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, to improve road safety. VOSA enforcement officers supported the operation at Coldra by carrying out vehicle safety inspections and issuing fixed penalty notices for various road safety offences.
During the spot checks, VOSA issued £1,800 of fixed penalty notices for overloaded light goods vehicles, £120 of fines for hours offences, £30 of fines for tachograph offences and £350 of other fines. Over the course of the day, 23 vehicles were taken off the road due to defects.
David Rhys, VOSA senior traffic examiner in South Wales, says: "VOSA was delighted to be part of this operation working in conjunction with Gwent Police and other agencies. The operation produced excellent results, with a very positive effect on improving road safety and the reduction of crime."
VOSA was joined by police officers from Gwent, South Wales, Avon and Somerset, Gloucestershire, Devon and Cornwall and Wiltshire, with support from the DVLA, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), HM Revenue and Customs, Her Majesty's Court Service, the Environment Agency and The National Plant and Equipment Register.
