Volvo Trucks is developing its own range of proprietary medium-heavy engines for trucks and buses to be launched in 2010.
The news was unexpectedly broken by Leif Johansson, Volvo's CEO, in Eskilstuna, Sweden, who also added that the engines will be on a "group-wide platform".
He adds: "In the future, emissions laws from various countries will become more harmonised and by having a global technology platform in place, Volvo will be able to generate economies of scale in research and development as well as purchasing and production."
As Motor Transport went to press there was no other information on the new powerplant available.
