Wincanton has signed a three-year agreement to run a container transport operation for retailer Argos.

Under the £40m deal, a joint Wincanton/Argos fleet will deliver goods from ports to Argos distribution centres, as well as between centres.

Wincanton expects about 35,000 inbound container  journeys per year to take place during the contract.

Liam McElroy, business unit director at Wincanton, says his company will also manage an IT project designed to shift containers on to rail where possible, in an effort to minimise CO2 emissions.

He adds: "By using Argos' fleet, we are able to ensure that both the transport and warehousing operations work together to generate further efficiencies across the contract."

The two companies have co-operated for the past 13 years on other warehousing and transport operations.
