Palletways member Tooles Transport has moved into a larger depot to cope with growing volumes and to position itself for when the recession ends. The Worcestershire-based business has expanded from a three-acre to a five-acre site, complete with a 37,500ft2 warehouse, in Rushock Trading Estate, Droitwich.
"We needed the space to cope with more work, as customers are increasingly becoming attracted to the part loads we can offer via Palletways. We are hoping the warehousing will attract new haulage work for us too, and put us in a good position for when the industry picks up," says MD John Toole.
Despite the tough economy, Toole informs MT that the group has won 20 new accounts since January and pallet volumes are still growing. "We find a mix of small and large contracts is safest, because it lessens the blow in the case of something going wrong with a big client for instance," he adds.
Overheads were also trimmed in January by making 7% of the workforce redundant and cutting the fleet from 68 to 60.
