Operators urged to check Olympics route

08 July 2009

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) and Road Haulage Association (RHA) are urging operators to inform them about any potential problems they can see with the official Olympic Route Network (ORN), which was  unveiled by the government last week.

The DfT has published a list of 232 sections of existing roads across the capital that will give priority to athletes, officials and media at peak times in the mornings and evenings to travel to venues during the 2012 games in London.

In the past few months, both the FTA and RHA have expressed fears that the ORN could restrict daytime access to shops and businesses for delivery drivers, as well as affect other services, such as street cleaning and refuse collection.

Gordon Telling, London policy manager for the FTA, says: "The worst affected routes are likely to be in Central London and Westminster.

"We are asking road transport operators to look at the routes, see if your business is going to be seriously affected if time restrictions are imposed, and then tell us about it."

Chrys Rampley, RHA manager for infrastructure, environment and business affairs, believes  delivery drivers must be allowed to go about their business during the Olympics with "the minimum of disruption".

She adds: "The ORN has the potential to have a big impact on deliveries."

Both Telling and Rampley are hoping to meet with Olympic Delivery Authority officials in the next few weeks to provide them with feedback.

"We will continue to put pressure on the government and Olympic organisers to make sure that the voice of road transport operators is heard," adds Rampley.

Full details of the routes can be found in The ORN Designation Order 2009 document, or click on the map below to see a larger version:
