Jobs to go at Somerfield depots

15 July 2009

Wincanton has begun consultations that could lead to 265 staff being made redundant at two depots it operates for Somerfield. The logistics company has begun a 90-day consultation period with 190 employees at a DC in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, with a view to its phased closure.

Wincanton is also consulting over proposals to make 75 staff redundant at another site in Bridgwater,  Somerset.

A total of 400 people currently work in warehouse, management, administrative and clerical roles at the facility. The decision follows a review by the grocery chain of its distribution network after the £1.6bn sale of its UK stores to the Co-operative Group in March.

A Somerfield spokesman says: "Somerfield and Wincanton will continue to work together to ensure that Somerfield stores and our customers continue to experience the high level of service and availability they have come to expect."
