A British lorry driver has been jailed for seven years for smuggling £89,000 worth of cocaine into the UK.
On 27 July, Canterbury Crown Court heard that 47-year-old Kevin Benjamin Jones of Welling, Kent was caught at Dover's Eastern Docks on 3 June with more than 2kg of cocaine and 1.48g of cannabis.
UK Border Agency (UKBA) officials discovered the drugs in the truck cab. He pleaded guilty to smuggling the drugs into the UK.
He received a seven-year prison sentence for smuggling the cocaine,and a six-month sentence, to run concurrently, for the possession of cannabis.
Malcolm Bragg, investigation assistant director for HM Revenues & Customs (HMRC), says: "We are determined to catch those smuggling illegal drugs into the UK. Narcotics have a devastating impact on individuals and local communities, and we are determined to pursue and bring to justice those involved in this deadly trade."
