UK-registered trucks accounted for 20% of the outbound goods traffic to the Continent in Q2 of 2009, up from 19% in the same period last year, the latest DfT figures reveal.
According to Peter Cullum, head of international affairs at the RHA, despite the weakness of Sterling against the Euro, the UK is still a net importer of goods, and low-cost operators from Eastern Europe are still carrying the bulk of UK exports as return loads.
"Some UK hauliers are getting back into Europe but the rules keep changing and it is hard for them to keep track of the rules in different countries," says Cullum.
"Speed limits, weight limits and axle weights can all vary, while local authorities can also set up their own restrictions."
