DHL has announced the proposed closure of the Marks & Spencer (M&S) Leicester sortation centre, which it operates on behalf of M&S, by January 2010 in response to the retailer reviewing its supply chain strategy. As a result, 111 DHL Supply Chain could be made redundant.

A DHL spokesman says: "DHL can confirm that it is entering a period of consultation with their employees, together with the relevant representative forums at the  Leicester sortation centre."

In March, DHL confirmed 193 staff faced redundancy following plans by M&S to close its Exeter Distribution Centre.

Meanwhile, in April, DHL made 60 redundancies following the closure of its Stakehill base in Middleton, Manchester, on 31 March. The closure was due to lower M&S volumes in the region.
