Contenders jostle for Truck of the Year award

07 October 2009

The shortlisted contenders for the prestigious 2010 International Truck of the Year (ITOY) award include the Volvo FH16.700, the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter 7.5-tonner, MAN's TGM/TGL middleweights and Scania's new R-Series.

Over the coming weeks, members of the ITOY jury - including Roadtransport.com's BigLorryBlog editor Brian Weatherley, who is the UK jury member - which represents 21 countries in Europe will each cast their 12 votes, with no more than seven available for any one entry.

All the votes are then collated by an independent referee, with no conferring among the judges or any Eurovision-style block voting permitted.

While the 700hp FH16.700 is clearly the 'glamour-puss' of the group, the little Canter could do well, thanks to its undoubted appeal to the vast army of small businesses who buy 7.5-tonners in large numbers.

Meanwhile, MAN's TGL/TGM middleweights continue the Munich truck-maker's popular 'Add Nothing' emissions philosophy, retaining EGR on its Euro-5 and EEV four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, while also gaining styling changes originally introduced on the TGX/TGS heavy truck  range.

That said, Scania's heavily revised and recently unveiled R-Series must be in with a pretty strong chance thanks to its major interior makeover and the latest two-pedal version of the Opticruise auto-box.

Of course, as soon as the winner is announced, you can expect to read all about it on Roadtransport.com. The current 2009 ITOY holder is the Mercedes-Benz Actros.
