White Van Man stereotype 'a thing of the past'

16 October 2009

Far from following a poor lifestyle, 'White Van Man' has cereal for breakfast, takes regular exercise and holidays in the Far East, so says a poll conducted by Express Insurance of more than 1,000 van drivers. In addition, 40% visit the gym regularly and also enjoy holidays in Latin America, South-East Asia and the Caribbean.

Only 8% said they started the day with a cooked breakfast; just 27% smoke, and spending time with the family was the number-one pastime.

Technology has also  become more prevalent. More than 30% of those polled own laptops, and keep themselves entertained with iPhones and MP3 players.

Unsurprisingly, football remains the preferred sport ahead of rugby and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, while action and comedy films still rate higher than costume dramas and romantic comedies.

Tony Ward, Express Insurance managing director, says: "The results show that time has softened the stereotypes of old. The fact that the pub didn't even register on the favourite pastime list shows just how 'White Van Man' has become more cultured over the past decade."
