Industry figures have voiced concern over the operational value of the Department for Transport's online benchmarking system (OLB), launched in April this year as part of the Freight Best Practice scheme.
Gavin Osborn, Sainsbury's warehouse optimisation manager, says: "As we are a retailer and not a pure road transport operator, it's debatable whether the information posted would be relevant."
Osborn points out that due to the specific nature of the operation, gaining comparable information would only be possible if rivals such as Tesco and Asda came onboard - so far none of the major supermarkets have joined up.
"We have fleets of trucks leaving out depots at 4am on Friday to stock up stores for the weekends; there aren't many operations you can compare like-for-like with," he adds.
Osborn also voices concerns over the sharing of confidential data and the time required to input it.
"I'd have to be convinced that the confidential information we're releasing would not put us at a disadvantage. And with 1,500 trucks, there's a lot of information to provide, which would be a job in itself," he says.
Stephen Rinsler, director of transport consultancy Bisham, agrees that there's a difficulty in companies matching their operation profile with other businesses to relevant information.
Rinsler says: "There's a real problem in getting to match apples with apples. Businesses might come under the road transport banner, but they can differ dramatically in the way they operate.
"A lot of time has to go into matching like-for-like if you want to produce relevant benchmark data, otherwise you will struggle to use it."
The scheme was launched in April this year after a trial period, with 60 operators adding data at least once a month. It aims to have 5% of the industry onboard within three years.
Scott Hardy, of transport consultancy AECOM, which is a consultant for the OLB programme, says: "OLB is an ever-evolving, highly flexible system and will continue to increase its range of KPIs, with further areas looking at CO2 emissions and maintenance soon to be added.
"The system meets the highest government standards on data security and business impact level is IL2-Protect," he adds.
