Muldoon to trial longer semi in Ireland

23 November 2009

Northern Ireland-based specialist trailer manufacturer Muldoon Transport Systems has been granted a vehicle special order by the province's Department of Environment to carry out road trials on its newly designed longer semi-trailer.

The trial, which is the first of its type to be permitted in the UK and Ireland, will last for one year and operate on all roads in Northern Ireland and designated roads in the Republic of Ireland.

It  measures 15.65m in length and comes with a Sidewinder positive steer-system rear axle, which is claimed to give the steering geometry of a standard length trailer, as well as ensuring proper load to axle weight distribution within a standard overhang.

Gerald Muldoon, company director and chief designer at Muldoon, says: "I am very optimistic the project will meet all the legal and design requirements.

"I have been speaking to many operators who have shown tremendous interest and support."

Earlier this month, Lincolnshire haulier Denby Transport said it would go ahead with trials of its own longer, heavier vehicle (LHV). The firm said it would risk legal action and run one of its pioneering Eco-Link LHVs on UK roads without a government permit.
