Schmitz Cargobull moves into rigid bodies

01 December 2009

County Durham-based Schmitz Cargobull (UK) has announced it will start building reefer bodies onto rigid chassis in order to maximise its range.

The decision to move into rigids, says general manager Paul Avery, allows the company to offer a wider reefer product range to existing customers. Previously operators wanting a reefer body on a rigid chassis have had to go elsewhere, with the possibility that the rival manufacturer could  then scoop both artic and rigid work.

Rigids will be available at 14, 18 and 26 tonnes. Avery says the company is considering rigid curtainsiders as well.

The Harelaw-based company also revealed a new fixed-roof curtainsider, influenced by operator feedback calling for a more robust and reliable trailer, which is easier to repair. However, it comes with a 150kg weight penalty, tipping the scales at 6,900kg.

To address repair issues with the trailer's previous structure, the new product has stronger rear frame, front corner pillars and cross-members.

David Pressley, Schmitz Cargobull product manager, is already looking at ways to cut the trailer's kerbweight, but it is essential it's done in the right places, he says.

Further changes are also made to the roof, which goes from a single strip of aluminium to steel interlocking sections. These can be replaced individually, removing the need for patching, he adds.

There is also the question of  cost, as aluminium has become expensive. "The switch to steel enables us to continue to build at a competitive price, which is high on our customers' requirements," says Pressley.
