Lambeth Council wins award for safety initiative

Wednesday 30 December 2009 09:00

A London council has won an award for its innovative scheme to reduce injuries to cyclists caused by lorries.

Lambeth Council and its waste management contractor, Veolia Environmental Services, have worked in partnership to offer cyclists and HGV drivers practical training in order to tackle the number of deaths and injuries caused on the roads.

The project allows cyclists the opportunity to sit in lorry cabs to find out about blind spots, while lorry drivers are offered cycle training, so they can experience what it feels like to cycle on the road next to large vehicles.

Robert Seear, Veolia's senior contracts manager in Lambeth, says: "Many of our HGV drivers are bicycle riders too, so they are only too aware of the potential dangers from both perspectives."

He adds: "For all concerned, it has been a thoroughly worthwhile scheme, and one that we hope will continue to prosper to help keep our streets as safe as possible for all road-users."
