Beverley, East Yorkshire-based FD Bird & Sons is closing its transport arm as a result of the recession.
Director John Bird tells Roadtransport.com that he is pulling out now before things get even tougher next year.
"Transport is just one arm of our business - we also run commercial storage, quarrying and agriculture operations. People that solely concentrate on haulage can do it a lot cheaper than us so it makes sense for us to call it a day."
According to its O-licence, FD Bird & Sons runs five vehicles out of a branch in Beverley, Humberside, and six from Diffield in Yorkshire. The firm also runs nine trailers.
An auction of the company's trucks and trailers is being held on Saturday 16 January 2010 at the firm's yard at The Old Hall, Catwick, Beverley, run by Malcolm Harrison Auctions.
The closure of the transport arm has resulted in six driver redundancies.
