MPs call for Driver CPC to include cycle awareness training

Friday 05 February 2010 05:00

A total of 66 MPs have now signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) calling for all HGV drivers to undertake a cycling awareness training course as part of the Driver CPC.

The motion - which was initially filed on 13 January - says that MPs are concerned about the disproportionate risk of death to cyclists that involve HGVs, claiming that such accidents account for seven in 12 cyclist deaths in London in 2009, with all but one of the victims being a woman.

While it supports the existing levels of cycle training provision given to adults and children to deal with traffic is says that more action is required to mitigate the threat posed by lorries.

As a result, it recommends that all lorries are equipped with side sensors, in-cab supervision systems, class IV safety mirrors and audible warnings. It also calls for the imposition of conditions of access to city centres for HGVs.

The motion was posed by Labour MP for Dover Gwynn Prosser and has been signed by Keighley MP Ann Cryer, who has campaigned against the VOSA's closure of Steeton test station in West Yorkshire on the grounds of keeping unsafe vehicles off the road.
