Road Tests & Reviews: ERF ECM6 (2002 - 2007)Euro 4

ERF’s rigid took only a small proportion of its sales, but it’s a market the firm seemed keen to grow. At its launch, the ECM was available with MAN’s D08 220 and 280hp engines, but some re-engineering by the ERF engineers meant it was also available with the whisper-quiet Cummins ISBe at Euro 3. The Cummins unit is fantastically economical, and married to the ZF six-speed box it provides a relaxing drive, but it’s also available with an Eaton in some models.

The interior is a triumph of functionality over style, but it does the job and provides a comfortable working environment. Available in distribution versions as a 4x2, 6x2 rear-lift and 6x2 rear-steer models range from 18-26 tonnes GVW, and come with day cabs as standard, sleepers available as an option.

Pros:

  • Choice of not one, but two, excellent engine types

Cons:

  • Cab based on an older MAN
  • Try finding one!
