Road Tests & Reviews: Fiat Ducato

Road Tests:

We couldn't help but be impressed with the Sevel van range last year, such was the level of improvement over the outgoing model, and recent roadtests of the new range haven't disappointed. With updated styling, new engines and a vastly expanded line-up the vehicle covers the weight range from 2.8 to 4.0t. In addition the loadspace option was expanded to 17m3.

There are three wheelbases, four overall lengths, three roof heights and seven different interior volume options available. The interior loading length was extended by 710mm to a maximum of 4,100mm and the width between the wheelarches is now 1.422mm, which Sevel claims is the market best.

Furthermore, it reckons it's the only vehicle to offer a sheet steel roof on all its van versions. Power comes from three diesel engines.

A 2.2-litre engine offers 100 and 120hp options, while high-power applications are served by a 157hp 3.0-litre motor. Maintenance intervals have been extended to 45,000km.
While the specification figures are impressuive, the interior layout of the cab area cranks things up another level.

The doors shut with an assured clunk and there's storage space aplenty. The gearshift is located on the dash and the instrument panel is clear and very well arranged.
The vehicle is now winning friends in the market and it scored a hit in our recent group van test.

Pros:

  • Superb interior layout
  • Excellent driveability

Cons:

  • Not sure about the looks
  • Work to do to prove the aftersales network
