Road Tests & Reviews: Fiat Punto (2001 - )

Road Tests:

Out with the old and in with the new. If the old Punto van went by pretty much unnoticed, then the new model should attract a lot more attention thanks to its progressive design and increased dimensions - freeing up space in the cockpit and load area.

Under the bonnet you have one of the finest small engines in the light CV market. Its 1.3-litre engine spins through the revs, delivering a progressive stream of usable power with fuel economy to be proud of; the typically Italian interior offers a dash of individuality and style.

Unfortunately the Punto is destined to sell only in small numbers due to a legacy of unreliability but the current model is far more solid than the previous one and deserves a second look, especially once you factor in its competitive pricing.

Pros:

  • Sharp styling
  • Impressive engine
  • Competitive pricing

Cons:

  • Less than reliable image
