Back with a bang in 2006 the latest Ford Ranger stepped up its game to compete with the likes of Nissan's Navara thanks to the inclusion of common-rail technology, a more controllable chassis, and a restyle inside and out.
Following the trend towards a more user-friendly design the interior leaves behind the workman-like arrangement and plumps for an ergonomically sound and stylish layout, though the continuing inclusion of an umbrella handbrake is a negative.
There's plenty of useable torque from the standard 2.5-litre 141hp lump for climbing hills or towing trailers, delivering its urge strongly from low-down. And it's a refined runner, driving confidently whether on or off-road and remaining composed when the going gets tricky.
But if that's not enough then the recently introduced 3.0-litre 154hp engine, complete with plenty of 'lifestyle' adornments, should satisfy those who like their pickups to turn heads on the driveway.
