Road Tests & Reviews: Mercedes-Benz Econic

Merc's unsung hero, the municipal specialist Econic, continues to present the strongest challenge to Dennis. The innovative cab formed of an aluminium space frame clad in composite panels is well established. AdBlue cleans the Euro-4 engines, which drive through six or (optional ) five-speed Allison autos.

Although conceived as a refulse collection vehicle, the Econic is just as likely to pop up in other roles such as fire-fighting and tanker work.

The standard UK chassis range includes 4x2, 6x2 mid and rear steer, and 6x4 double-drive variants, with the previous special build 1+3 8x4 joining the regular line-up.
More specialist conversions are available through M-B's Custom Tailored Trucks programme.

Combined with the already extensive regular options list, this provides specialist operators with the flexibility to build exactly what the job demands.

Pros:

  • Versatility
  • Driver comfort

Cons:

  • Cab can be expensive to repair
