Road Tests & Reviews: Scania R124 (2001 - )Euro 4

Road Tests:

After denting its formidable reputation somewhat with 4 Series Scania has bounced back with a vengeance with the R series. Its “heavy” focus is reflected in its chassis options list including 4x2 and 6x2 twin-steer/pusher/tag models with nine, 11, 12 and 16-litre engines. The 12-litre in-line six delivers 420 and 470hp at Euro-3, while at Euro-4 the engine gets EGR and its ratings change to 340, 380, 420 and 480hp.

A new range of gearboxes should be imminent, but auto fans who still want a clutch pedal can spec Opticruise.

Cab options include low height sleeper, normal height sleeper, intermediate “High Line” and full-blown luxury “Top Line”.

By not building smaller trucks Scania remains 100% focussed on what it does best—heavies. And the R series has adjusted that focus even more sharply. Time (and UK sales) will show whether its EGR approach was best for Euro-4.

Pros:

  • R Cab is a real contender for “King of the Road”
  • Retains real driver appeal even without a fire-breathing V8

Cons:

  • Chassis price - although that’s reflected in residuals

When Surrey contract haulier John Byrne and Sons needed a new plant carrier with a 19-tonne payload in a hurry for a new contract, Mansfield's SHAWtrack Services came to the rescue. A 2002 Scania R124L 420 6x2 twin-steer tractor unit was converted into an 8x2 rigid in just five weeks. The beavertail body has double-cranked full-width electro-hydraulic ramps with boom support, and the truck is finished in the livery of Byrne's client, Winner Plant Hire. SHAWtrack also supplied an existing 32-tonne Scania free of charge while the conversion was being carried out.  Read more
