Road Tests & Reviews: Toyota Hiace (2001 - )

Road Tests:

Like many other manufacturers Toyota gave its panel van a lick and brush up ahead of the 2007 Euro-4 emissions deadline, although the changes were very minor. Outside the van got a revamp, while power from the 2.5-litre D-4D common rail diesel was given a bit of a boost.

Top power from the entry level Hiace was up 7hp, to 95hp at 3,600rpm, whiole the torque was given a more dramatic boost, up nearly 20%.

For high power applications the Hiace is available with a 117hp top rating.

On the inside the Hiace benefited from a new four-spoke steering wheel, a silver finish to the central instrument cluster, different seat fabrics and a standard CD player that can play MP3 files stored on disc. The exterior changes were pretty much limited to a new grille, bumper and headlights, with the overall dimensions of the van left unaltered.

Pros:

  • Strong reputation for reliability
  • Excellent engine

Cons:

  • Styling changes not taken far enough
  • Limited range
