Road Tests:
A legend in its own lifetime, the current Hilux is more of an evolution than a revolution, building on its reputation for no-nonsense reliability. But now it gets the refinement levels to match its acclaimed off-road credentials.
After an initial false start, thanks to just 101hp from its 2.5-litre unit, Toyota has boosted it to 120hp adding a 3.0-litre unit producing 171hp, and the extra power lifts the Hilux into the upper Echelons of the sector.
The interior could come straight from one of the firm's saloons with light grey plastic abounding to contrast dully with its light-grey seat fabrics. But if it looks uninspiring it's also expertly laid out, while the rear seats on the double-cab provide room for three passengers.
It also rides well on-road, displaying little nervousness through the corners, though its greatest feature is still its talent for off-road work, which is arguably best-in-class.
Pros:- Superb off-road ability
- Overall refinement
| Cons:- Slightly softer on-road compared to some
- 2.5-litre engine still lacks power
