Road Tests & Reviews: Volkswagen Crafter n/a

Road Tests:

Born from the joint venture with mercedes, the Volkswagen incarnation is a much more aggressive machine from a styling point of view. The front grille gives the Crafter the appearance of the Transit on steroids and the VW designers appear to be bent on getting their new van noticed. Although not to everyone's tastes, we're big fans. That aside, the Crafter differs from the Sprinter in the choice of power options where it prefers it sown engines in a variety of offerings.

The VW is a very strong candidate and if the Sprinter is one of the favourites then the Crafter has to also be at the head of the market. The interior is virtually identical, offering the same high levels of interior appointment and fit and finish, while the active and passive safety elements ensure driver and load security are taken care of. While the steering lock of the Crafter isn't in the 'turn on a sixpence' class of Daily or Sevel vehicles, the manoeuvrability of the VW is adequate, with good visibility both to the side and straight ahead.

Pros:

  • Styling suits our tastes
  • Extensive body options

Cons:

  • Adjustable steering wheel not standard
