Incorporating 70% new parts the latest version of Mitsubishi's legendary Shogun builds on its hard-won reputation as a serious off-roader. Powered by a refised 3.2-litre common-rail engine that does a good job of smoothing out the previous incarnation's lack of refinement, the 4WORK sticks with the company's philosophy to free up space.

With 580kg of payload and a load volume of 1.9m3 it's never going to break any records, but its party trick is evident once you leave the road. The Outlander operates in 2WD in normal conditions but can switch to 4WD when things get more difficult, so you to leave the road in comfort while transporting tools and kit in the rear.

If you need an uncompromising off-roader then look elsewhere. But if you want stylish transport that's also competent in the wild then this just might be for you.
