Road Tests & Reviews: Volvo FE

VOLVO FE DISTRIBUTION:
What the FL is to the Midlum, so the FE is tho the Premium.
The FE marks a new direction for Volvo, providing a dedicated model range for the two and three-axled rigid 18-26 tonne sector, rather than making do with the extremities of the FL and FM ranges.

The engines are the same 240hp and 280hp units as in the FL, with the addition of a 320hp version. However, our only drive so far showed even this struggled at 26 tonnes.
No performance issues were noted with the 18-tonner, however; even the lower rating coped well. Cab options are day and sleeper, with an intermediate option that still has room for a bunk.

There are no plans to introduce the I-Shift automated transmission on these lighte rmodels; Allison providing the only clutchless option. Among the welcome options available are a Jake brake, Hill Hold and a rear-steer 6x2.

VOLVO FE TIPPER:
Volvo's FE has hit the ground running to compete against the likes of the MAN TGM and DAF CF75 in the utility market. Its 26-tonne GVW and heavier chassis are a disadvantage, but the FE is a safe option operators are familiar with.

The exterior borrows from the French and the 7.2-litre engine, which was developed from the Deutz motor, is available in three power ratings.

On three axles, the 320hp appears a little weak at the bottom and when asked to move away from standstill and through urban areas, as well as at the top end, moving swiftly up from 20mph towards A-road and dual-carriageway speed limits.

It has been available in the UK for the better part of 18 months. Aggregate operators might prefer the FM but for a versatile tipper on three axles, the FE certainly has plenty to offer.

Pros:

  • DISTRIBUTION: Cab line-up; Volvo support
  • TIPPER: Handling, Swedish safety standards, Specification

Cons:

  • DISTRIBUTION: 26-tonner struggles even with 320hp
  • TIPPER: No 18-tonne option; Kerbweight.
