Fuel For Thought
by: Kevin Swallow
Renault Trucks has taken the common-rail route. Lookin in the Premium dCi brochure and there it is in black and white (and light blue). This "leading edge technology" is claimed to give the Premium improved fuel economy and better reliability, as well as a competitive kerbweight. Always happy to test a manufacturer's claim, we've been round our Scottish test route in a 420 dCi 4x2 tractor loaded to 40 tonnes.

Verdict

There are plenty of opportunities in the fleet sector for truck manufacturers. The overall fuel figure has become the be-all and end-all for operators as well as manufacturers and the Premium delivered the goods. However, operators will need to pick the right power option for their businesses. As for the driver, many feel that as long as the truck has a decent sound system, a bit of space and plenty of oomph, they won't be too fussed over which tyle you buy. The Premium tractor has developed into a solid, functional fleet truck and the single cab has al the space a driver could wish for For the operator, the overall fuel figure confirms what major fleet operators have already discovered - this is a front-runner in its class.
