Hilux Goes De Luxe
by: Julian Milnes
There's a time and a place for pickups, and their traditional place is off-road. But the latest generation of pickups are proving to be more than mere hill climbers. Does that icon of the class, Toyota's Hilux, follow suit?

Verdict

There's been a definite leap forward in the ongoing development of the Hilux with the latest model. All the main areas have received attention, from the driving dynamics and abin space to the increased levels of refinement and improved loadspace dimensions. And though the engine has not, for the moment, been given the power boost that would keep it competitive with its rivals, it's not too far off the mark in everyday life to become a problem. But an uprated version is in the pipeline for operators who want that extra grunt for towing and the like. So while other manufacturers go gallivanting off in pursuit of different markets and kudos, Toyota has stuck to what it knows by producing an honest workhorse. It may not provide as much sparkle overall as the Nissan Navara, for example. But like its predecessor, it gives the impression that constant use and abuse will not phase it.
