Best In Classby: Julian Milnes
CM does not shy away from highlighting weaknesses in the vehicles it tests so it's only fair to applaud excellence, and the latest incarnation of the VW Caddy really is hard to fault.
Verdict
While perfection has not yet been achieved there is little to fault in the new Caddy TDI. Thorough engineering and attention to detail will always shine through but to beat the competition outright you have to offer something special. And that's what Volkswagen has done.
It's competitively priced, has excellent build quality, is good to drive and running costs are among the lowest. Throw in the new power unit and it's arguably the best the class has to offer.
It was not so long ago that VW was considered an also-ran in the commercial market. But with the new Caddy and Transporter it has advanced its commercial range to such a degree that they are now a viable, if not better, alternative to the equivalent offerings from Ford and the gang.
If the Caddy represents the current state of the market the next new contender had better be pretty near perfection if it wants to make as good an impression.
