Small But Nicheby: Brian Weatherley
What Volvo's FM9.380 lacks in cubes it makes up for with excellent driveability and a surprisingly gutsy performance.
Verdict
There are lots of things we like about the FM9.380, even if we can't deliver a definitive verdict on its economy, which is as frustrating for us as it is for you. The 9.4-litre engine is a real eye-opener, although it's fair to say that as long as it's willing to work hard drivers will work it hard, which isn't necessarily conducive to maximum economy, giving more credence to the 'big engine working lazy is better' theory.
Where the FM9 will flourish is on maximum-payload work where performance isn't critical, such as a bulk blower in the Fens, but clearly you won't be buying one for stone-carrying duties in the Peak District! Volvo has come up with a very driveable machine which defies all the wisdom on small-capacity diesels and confirms the Swede's ability to build a top-handling eight-legger. If only they could create more room in the FM cab - and solve that mirror conundrum.
