Ray Hirst drives a MAN TGA 410 XL for Hessle Forklift Trucks out of Castleford. “The Stralis cab is nice and roomy,” he told us, “and it has plenty of storage. Just what is needed for regular nights out. The truck runs quietly and the ride is better than my MAN. The gear change is so smooth I would leave it in auto all the time. It is brilliant, but I can imagine it would be a nightmare if the electrics started to go wrong. It feels a bit sluggish for 540hp. I like the cab layout with the table, TV shelf and fridge and the roller blinds to the front and sides.” Mick Gent from Buxton drives for Lomas Distribution. “This is a bit plush next to my Scania 144,” he said as he settled in behind the wheel. “I like the racing position,” he joked, setting it to its lowest, near vertical position. “The system check is very clear but I will have to get used to not having a clutch pedal. The brakes are very good. The kick-down clicks in at the bottom of the accelerator travel and it holds onto the revs all the way to 2,100rpm. The power is good. Brake and accelerator pedals are low so there is no need to raise your heel above the floor.” “Entry is similar to the Scania but this driving position is a bit lower,” Tony Jeffs told us. He drives a 420 for Tibbett and Britten. “The higher the better for visibility,” he continued. “I like the controls on the steering wheel and the way the seat wraps around me, giving plenty of support. It’s a lot quieter than in the Scania and with this amount of power it doesn’t feel like 44 tonnes. I like the cab styling and there is plenty of room to stand.
