From wartime icon to luxury roadster, the Jeep has now surfaced as an all-terrain load carrier. Be prepared to salute the Jeep Pioneer.

Verdict

With such a specialised cateogory dominated by established rivals any newbie had better be good of it's to make any sort of impact. Fortunately, converting the Jeep Pioneer from lifestyle passenger vehicle to CV involved minimal engineering. This contender comes with solid credentials and makes the jump into the more demanding commercial environment with ease. Surprisingly solid build quality, nifty handling for a vehicle of this type and a four-wheel-drive system that has been evolving since the Second World War all help to make this an appealing vehicle. On the downside, it could be a touch more thrifty when it comes to fuel consumption and the engine does make its presence known when pushed. But that's detracting from the overall competence of the product. If you carry a minimal amount of gear, leave the road on a regular basis and, dare we say, want something that looks respectable in the fleet then get a Jeep. And not any old Jeep - get yourself a Pioneer.
