Our American cousins have always claimed 'you can't beat cube'. What the hell do they know? MAN's 10.5 litre D20 diesel has just driven over the rule book - and into the record book.
Verdict
"Friends, hauliers, countrymen - we've come to praise the D20…not to bury Cummins." Unfortunately, CM's roadtest might end up just doing that. All the while the ISMe was clearly less thirsty than MAN's home-built diesels its place in the ERF ECT was assured.
But judging by our results the D20 could well have driven the first nail into the ISMe's coffin. Moreover, a TGA-powered D20 with a standard Tipmatic box (there's no auto on the ECT) costs almost £2,000 less than the equivalent ISMe ECT. So how long before someone asks: "Can I have a D20 above 350hp in an ERF?" On fuel economy, performance and sheer driveability the D20 is more than a match for the Cummins. The only things we can't predict is its reliability or residuals.
If D20 can go the distance then MAN will have rewritten the rule book on diesels. What was that about a good little'un?
