Stick Not Twist

The Euro-4 compliant Daf XF95 is just round the corner, complete with a revamped cab. But we've found some compelling reasons to stick with the old faithful…

Verdict

Yes, you've read it right: 8.14mpg from a 530hp big-cab 6x2 tractor at 44 tonnes. That's some result and, even allowing for the help our test truck had from the weather and non-CM test trailer, it's yet another reason why the XF95 should continue the year-on-year growth it's consistently achieved since 1997. In fact Daf has given UK operators the perfect excuse NOT to buy a Euro-4 tractor before they have to. However, for all the Son et Lumiere attractions of the Alphine package, the Super Spacecab clearly needs the forthcoming interior makeover and for that reason alone the new MX-powered model can't come soon enough. Meanwhile, Daf should consider enhancing the cab appeal of the curret XF95. It might also have to reconsider its "there is no standard spec" stance, especially on AS-Tronic, when rivals including Iveco and MAN offer the same ZF auto as standard. The XF 95 is still a fine truck, but it's facing tougher competition year by year.
