Up With The Pack

Back with a radical restyle and some serious development under the skin, the L200 from Mitsubishi has a lot to prove.

Verdict

As a direct improvement over the old model the new L200 hits the spot. It's no longer just a pretty face - this is now a useful working tool that gets the fundamentals right: strong engine, capable chassis, decent build quality and improved packaging all add up to a strong product that can earn its keep. But the game has also changed since the last model with fierce competition from Nissan, Toyota and Isuzu; so for all this commendable development work the new model has not risen to the top. That spot is still very much held by Nissan's outstanding Navara. But Mitsubishi now has a product that can hold its own in any company (and also excels in some areas) without looking like an also-ran, and for that the company should certainly be commended.
