Carry On Clio!by: Colin Barnett
If you need to move 25 tonnes of cargo across continents you clearly won't get far with a Renault Clio van. But if you need to move a few parcels, or a service engineer and his tookit , as quickly as is legally possible, the latest Clio CDV will be right up your street. It's also as comfy as a car - and is the thriftiest van we have ever driven laden.
Verdict
By its very nature the Clio Van is never going to be used for serious goods hauling, but that's not to say that it doesn't have its place in the great scheme of things.
There's a whole army of businesses out there with a need for basic transportation of a driver and small load and, like all operators, they would like to satisfy that need at the lowest possible cost. While there may be ways to get a small CV on the road for less capital outlay, once on the road the current crop of compact but high-tach CDVs offer impressively low running costs.
Based on our test results, the Clio Van takes the price for the lowest running costs in the business, helped by its amazing lack of thirst and skimpy servicing requirements.
It has style and practicality in equal great quantities. In fact, the only reason we can think of for not buying one is to exact revenge on Renault for taking the lovely Helene ("size matters) Mahieu off our TV screens.
