Digital tachographs a good thing

Who wants a digital tachograph? Well drivers actually. That is according to the drivers at a Scottish bakery which has 15 vehicles equipped with them, supplied by Stoneridge. It reports that the drivers prefer the digital tachos to the analogue.

One reason is that it is easier having all the information on one card rather than having to carrying around lots of paper charts. Another is that there is no change of making a mistake such as those so common in the centre part of paper charts.

There is one potential problem: if you forget your driver card you will not be able to move the vehicle and will probably either have to miss a shift or go home to find it.
Still fleets with only analogue tachos are already finding problems, particularly when a hire vehicle arrives with the digital equipment and no-one has a card to enable them to drive it. We will soon be in the peak hiring season just before Christmas and if the rental vehicle has a ditigal tachograph, it could be a problem.

See Motor Transport's report this week and tell us of your experiences of digital tachos by commenting on this post.
