The response to the Eddington report makes interesting reading.
Shadow transport secretary Chris Grayling, writing in the Sunday Telegraph said that the report pointed out the obvious. He says that Eddington's plan, apart from road tolling, is a number of smaller projects. He says this can't want until 2015. On tolling, he says "We will need some new roads and to use road pricing and tolls in the right places: for example to support improvement projects such as the M6 toll road. But not a road pricing scheme like the one the Government wants. We also need a proper programme of incentives to encourage people to drive greener cars, not just to try to force people out of their cars."
The Daily Telegraph itself says that cars are a necessity for many people. Road pricing should be used as a way to improve and extend out highways ,not another way to raise revenue.
The Times says that that Britain is dominated by London and the south, while in other European countries the populations is more widely spread. This leads to congestion and The Times supports national road tolling. The Financial Times praises the smaller projects suggested by Eddington.
