Britdisc - Eurovignette

This week's Commercial Motor investigation asks the question as to whether the UK should introduce a system to tax foreign vehicles entering the UK.

The Department for Transport is still considering all options, though is not ruling out the possibility of a vignette.
Belgium, Luxemburg, Sweden, The Netherlands and Denmark have the Eurovignette system, whereas Germany and Austria have gone electronic.
Should the UK adopt either of these systems or follow the French and Italian example and introduce copious amounts of tolls on the motorways.

Although i have been retired injured for 6yrs i did drive hgvs all over uk and eu for 34yrs.In all this time i saw the british haulage industry exploited by the eu.The brits everytime they landed in the eu were subject to either road tolls or the eurovignette. On top of this when they worked the uk for long periods they paid highest fuel prices in eu [and still do+highest road taxes. With the coming of the eu drivers in massive numbers to the uk something has to be done to try and get some kind of level playing field for the long suffering uk industry.I always said when i was on the road that the euroviginette should have been introduced and the argument for it is even stronger now.Otherwise you are going to have ever increasing nos of forein drivers coming over paying no taxes, working for low rates, running on cheap fuel, were does that leave the brits?at the bottom of the pile were they have always been.As a final comment i would just like to say the next british political party to back the british hauliers will be the first.
