Today in Road Transport, 24 September 2007

It's just as well that truck operators have thick skins, because it sometimes seems that the whole world is against them. But this time, they might need the epidermis of an elephant: now a a survey from the Freight on Rail group indicates that 75% of the public is opposed to road trains. The clue is in the name of the group, perhaps...

In any case, it could be that we need to come up with a more user-friendly name than 'road trains', 'longer, heavier vehicles' or even 'LHVs'. Any suggestions? 'Eco-wagons', perhaps, or 'green trucks'? No, juggernaut is not acceptable...

Meanwhile, there's been a call from tachograph analysis firm Tachodisc for Brussels to make sure that the next generation of digital tachograph is 'futureproofed'. Let's hope that the authorities realise that their own, glacial, pace of change is not reflected by technology.
