Today in Road Transport, 27 February 2008

Today’s big news story is the £222m takeover bid that Isle of Man hedge fund management firm Laxey has made for logistics group TDF. On the blogs, the hottest topic is probably the potential tie-up between Caterpillar and Navistar – check out Oliver Dixon’s World Trucks Blog for more information on that one.

Two issues, crime and fuel prices, have figured especially strongly this week. Today is no exception as the CBI adds its voice to the call for cheaper diesel and a survey shows that one in six truck drivers across Europe has been subjected to attack.

Yesterday I mentioned the operational benefits that telematics systems can bring – and today we hear how a district council’s telematics system has helped protect residents from floods. However it does seem that the industry is largely unsatisfied with its IT in general.

In other news, Tesco embroils itself in a warehouse controversy and Page Group goes into administration. At least C Butt is on the right track...
