Today in Road Transport, 18 April 2008

Expansion brings its benefits though it can be more problematic for some than for others, as today’s news stories indicate. Culina Logistics has begun a recruitment drive for its new warehouse in Suffolk, due to open in 2009 – but the opening of Expect’s new depot near Bradford is to be delayed due to planning issues. However it’s not all bad news: the company is reporting “significant growth in sales”.

Moving on to the related topic of investment, Ryder plans to spend £10.6m on new rental vehicles for delivery this year while Scania dealer TruckEast attributes a recent improvement in its customer satisfaction score in part to the £400,000 of capital expenditure it has made since April 2007.

In today’s legal news, a Manchester truck driver who faked an attempted hijack of his vehicle is fined £1,000, and an O-licence bid fails after the Deputy TC hears that the applicant had operated without a licence and driven without a driving licence.

Over in the blogs, Truck & Driver editor Will Shiers posts some pictures from a recent trip to the States including some striking but possibly less than practical New York garbage trucks.
