Today in Road Transport, 22 April 2008

A couple of long-running industry issues, namely LHVs and oil prices, rear their heads again today as Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly expresses her doubts about longer, heavier vehicles and the RHA joins the SNP in the call for a fixed oil price – suggesting that any increases in price above a set level can be compensated for through reduced fuel duty.

One firm’s loss is another firm’s gain – Ramage Distribution recently moved into administration, and now transport and warehousing operator Pollock (Scotrans) has stepped in to take over some of its work, giving a lifeline to paper-maker Tullis Russell.

And there’s good news on the work front for Ceva Newsfast, which has had its contract with Twinings renewed; for Recruitment Development East, which will now be suppling Coscon with temporary drivers; and for Scania, which has won a major order with a Russian grocery chain.

Over in the blogs, BigLorryBlog carries on globetrotting: as well as some US trucks from the 1920s or 1930s to identify, there are lots of photos of old trucks and buses in Malta. And in the World Trucks Blog, Oliver Dixon has the first word on the Paccar results, out earlier today.
