Today in Road Transport, 2 June 2008

A mixed bag of news stories today, covering many of the recurrent themes in road transport - consolidation centres, Continental haulage and acquisitions to name but three. In Norwich, Foulger Transport vehicles are being allowed access to a bus lane to attract business for the firm's consolidation centre; Superfast is scrapping its Rosyth-Zeebrugge ferry, to the disappointment of hauliers and trade associations alike; and Wincanton acquires defence and aerospace logistics group Product Support Limited (PSL) for £27m.

In legal news, the Highways Agency refuses to release legal advice that would explain why it attempted to impose restrictions on Orwell Crossing Lorry Park, and one firm learns why it pays always to follow the correct disciplinary and dismissal procedures as one of its drivers wins an unfair dismissal case on a technicality - although the employment tribunal has warned that the award will be slashed by half.

And there's plenty of vehicle and other product info today, both in the news stories and on the blogs: Smith Electric Vehicles is offering an electric tipper with a substantial 2,400kg payload; things get heavy at BigLorryBlog with a look at some Western Star 40-tonne off-road tippers (pictured below); and the Truck & Van Blog offers an exclusive video preview of CM's first UK drive of the Peugeot Bipper.
