Today in Road Transport, 4 June 2008

LHVs.jpgToday we have more on the government's rejection of longer, heavier vehicles - despite its decision not to allow a trial of LHVs (pictured right), it will consider allowing longer semi-trailers.

The other major contentious issue of the moment, fuel prices and the related protests, also rears its head again. An FTA report suggests that decoupling truck and car fuel taxes can be achieved for only £400m, much less than the £1bn cited by the Burns Report in 2005. Operators must be hoping that this evidence will sway the government into taking action as soon as possible, for it has emerged that hauliers in the UK had a worse 2007 than those of any other country in Europe.

Still on the topic of fuel prices and protests, here on the Road Transport Blog Oliver Dixon has some harsh words for the Road Haulage Association. And elsewhere on the blogs, BigLorryBlog shares some advice on how to take a nice shot of a tipper and takes a look at self-propelled cherry pickers.
