Today in Road Transport, 9 July 2008

As today's news stories highlight, many road transport firms are defying the difficult economic conditions: Lloyd Fraser Holdings' latest results show it to be "well placed for the future"; Ceva Logistics is "ahead of last year" and has set itself some ambitious targets to hit by 2010; and the UK contract logistics industry as a whole is enjoying growth of 10.5%.

However in tough times it can pay to be cautious, and perhaps this explains Stobart Group's decision not to buy collapsed Leeds haulier Macfarlane Transport Holdings. Talking of Stobart, chief executive Andrew Tinkler has been in the news arguing for longer trailers to be allowed on UK roads.
