Today in Road Transport, 25th February 2009

According to a report from the CBI, the UK road network is failing, and a spokesperson from the FTA makes the interesting point that "Putting money into the UK transport network will reap a far higher investment return for British businesses than the latest bank bailout. The CBI recognises this - it's about time the government did too."

Rail clearly is not the complete answer, but at least there is some progress on intermodal facilities: three locations in Leicestershire have been suggested as possible sites for a new railfreight terminal in the East Midlands.

City Link is spending big money (at least £31m) on updating its network operations, replacing 300 box trailers with curtainsiders and buying 12,000 pallet cages to replace roll cages. The company is also changing its depot management model, decentralising its customer care; these and other changes seem to be working, as the firm has reduced its losses substantially.

Ford has given a preview of how its new Ranger pickup will look, ahead of the launch in Geneva next month.
