Today in Road Transport, 1st April 2009

April Fool's day might not seem like the best time to introduce new legislation and enforcement, but we have two major developments coming in today:

First is the introduction of the Graduated Fixed Penalties scheme, which will allow VOSA staff and police officers to impose fines on both UK and overseas drivers.

However, according to Laura Hailstone of Motor Transport, VOSA's implementation of the GFP scheme will largely be deferred until the end of May - although the police are set to start immediately.

Brian Weatherley (Editor of Commercial Motor and Mr BigLorryBlog) was up at the launch of the scheme first thing this morning, where a number of unsuspecting foreign drivers found themselves being stopped and scrutinised by the Road Safety Minister, a small army of senior policemen and a phalanx of VOSA folk. They might think twice about braving the M20 again!

The second piece of new law is the blindspot mirror legislation - check out the rules (and the Commercial Motor blindspot mirror and camera test) at the Roadtransport.com blindspot page.
